Careful planning before submitting any project for ethics and governance review helps to navigate the process and get research up and running sooner.
The Office for Research can assist you with the application requirements but please read the information below and contact us if you have any questions.
Research Clinics to assist with the application process will be held in the Ngarnga Centre on Tuesdays 12-1.
Remember:
The Principal Investigator must be senior staff member of Peninsula Health unless otherwise authorised by the Office for Research.
When you submit a project for Human Research Ethics Committee review, you’ll need to be able to show that:
- your research has scientific merit
- any benefits outweigh any associated risks
- the people who work on your research have the proper qualifications
- you treat the participants with respect, especially vulnerable groups

Step 1 – Design your research protocol
- It’s important you discuss your proposed research with anybody you plan to work with on the project. This will help you complete your research protocol.
- Peninsula Health has a Research Protocol Template for projects involving of already existing data and a Research Protocol Template all other research (EXCLUDING CLINCIAL TRIALS)
- A protocol for a clinical trial must comply with the SPIRT STATEMENT.
Step 2 – Submit your protocol to the Office for Research
- Submit your protocol to the Office for Research for advice regarding the appropriate approval pathway eg QA, Lower Risk, Higher Risk
- Applications where the protocol has not been submitted for this advice will not be accepted for review as there are 5 Approval Pathways.
Step 3 – Prepare your supporting documents
- You may need to submit supporting documents with your application. It’s a good idea to get started on these as soon as possible so you have plenty of time to submit your application.

Step 1 – Design your research protocol

Step 2 – Select a certified Reviewing Human Research Ethics Committee to review your project
- Peninsula Health HREC is not certified to review multi-site research.
- Select a certified Reviewing Human Research Ethics Committee to review your project. For a list go to https://www.clinicaltrialsand research.vic.gov.au.
Step 3 – Prepare your supporting documents
- To find out what documents you need go the the web-site of your selected HREC.
- You may need to submit supporting documents with your application. It’s a good idea to get started on these as soon as possible so you have plenty of time to submit your application.
