Frankston Hospital Redevelopment

Now in its final year of construction, the $1.1 billion Frankston Hospital redevelopment is the largest ever health infrastructure investment in Melbourne’s south-east.

What’s happening?

The redevelopment and expansion of Frankston Hospital is delivering a new multi-storey tower with additional bed capacity, new operating theatres, enhanced mental health and oncology services along with expanded maternity and paediatric services.

The redevelopment also includes a new main entrance, multi-deck car park and two state-wide emergency department initiatives: a five-bed emergency department mental health, alcohol and other drugs hub, and a dedicated paediatric zone. Works on the new Frankston Hospital began in June 2022, near the Emergency Department on Yuille Street.

The redeveloped Frankston Hospital will have modern facilities, amenities and equipment that will support the delivery of enhanced care and patient and staff wellbeing. Increased service capacity will provide more access for people living locally, improving wait times and enabling patients to access more clinical support services closer to home.

What’s the benefit?

The massive redevelopment is delivering:

  • a new tower with 12 levels of clinical services and a new main entrance
  • 130 more beds
  • new spaces for mental health and oncology services
  • 15 new operating theatres – meaning more surgeries and shorter wait times for the local community.
  • new maternity, obstetrics and paediatric wards
  • a women’s clinic
  • a special care nursery
  • a refurbished and expanded emergency department
  • a new rooftop helipad
  • a new multi-deck carpark

Who’s leading this project?

The Frankston Hospital redevelopment is being delivered by the Victorian Health Building Authority in partnership with Peninsula Health and the Exemplar Health consortium.

The project is being delivered as a public private partnership (PPP) under the Partnerships Victoria framework. Exemplar Health – comprising of Lendlease, Honeywell, Compass Group and Capella Capital – is designing, constructing, and financing the redevelopment and will maintain the new facility.

Frankston Hospital will remain a public hospital, with all clinical health services operated by Peninsula Health.

When will works be completed?

Construction of the Frankston Hospital redevelopment began in June 2022 and main works are on track for completion by the end of 2025. The redevelopment will start to welcome patients back in 2026.  Further refurbishment works of the existing hospital and the construction of a childcare centre and community centre will follow.
