Impella & Extracorporeal Carbon Dioxide Removal (ECCO2R)

We deliver advanced care and life-support for critically ill patients when traditional heart and lung methods in the ICU have failed.

Advanced therpies offered

Extracorporeal Carbon Dioxide Removal

Extracorporeal Carbon Dioxide Removal (ECCO2R) provides temporary life support for critically ill patients with reversible respiratory failure.

ECCO2R works by using an extracorporeal circuit to remove carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the blood, reducing the burden on the lungs and providing respiratory support in specific conditions like hypercapnic respiratory failure or acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). It is particularly useful when mechanical ventilation risks further lung injury.

Impella

Impella provides temporary life support for critically ill patients with reversible cardiac conditions.

The Impella is a small, mechanical heart pump designed to help the heart pump blood when it is struggling to do so on its own. It is inserted into the body through a blood vessel, typically in the leg, and positioned inside the heart via a catheter. The device temporarily takes over some of the heart’s workload, allowing it to rest and recover, this ensures the body receives adequate blood flow even when the heart is weak.

At Peninsula Health Impella is used for a select group of patients with impaired heart function in the setting of an acute myocardial infarct. It can also be used to support selected patients during and after complex coronary angiography.
